An architectural and interior photography study of Residence 303 at 20 Mark Twain Lane, Alys Beach, Florida.
Along Scenic Highway 30A, Alys Beach has established an architectural identity defined by restraint, proportion, and an unmistakable sense of place. Its white masonry buildings, carefully composed streetscapes, and thoughtful relationships between private and public spaces create a coastal environment unlike any other.
At 20 Mark Twain Lane, Residence 303 at The May offers a perspective on this design philosophy—one that connects refined interiors with the architecture, landscape, and daily rhythm of the surrounding town.
Photographed by M Little Productions, the residence reveals how material, light, and architectural framing can shape the experience of a space.
Architecture That Connects to Its Surroundings
Designed by Merrill, Pastor & Michael, The May represents an important addition to the Alys Beach Town Center. Completed in 2019, the four-story mixed-use building introduces residential living above a ground-floor commercial space.
Its architecture responds to a prominent location overlooking the town's amphitheatre and Scenic Highway 30A.
Rather than separating residents from the activity below, the building incorporates covered porches, generous openings, and carefully considered shutters that create a relationship between the interiors and their surroundings.
From Residence 303, views extend across palm-lined streets, neighboring white façades, and toward the Gulf of Mexico. The architecture becomes both a frame for the landscape and an integral part of it.
A Refined Approach to Coastal Interiors
Inside, the design is defined by a restrained palette of whites, soft neutrals, pale wood, and subtle coastal blues.
Natural textures introduce warmth without overwhelming the simplicity of the architecture. Woven dining chairs, linen upholstery, wood furnishings, and layered textiles bring tactile contrast to the light-filled rooms.
In the living area, a substantial timber dining table grounds the composition, while soft furnishings and a muted coastal painting create a quieter, more intimate atmosphere.
The result is a contemporary coastal interior that feels considered rather than themed—an approach in which texture and proportion carry more weight than decoration.
Materiality in the Details
Some of the most compelling design decisions are found in the smallest moments.
Glossy hexagonal tile catches and reflects daylight, revealing variations in surface and finish. Softly patterned textiles introduce delicate color and movement. Sculptural lighting and carefully selected furnishings create rhythm within an otherwise understated palette.
These details illustrate an essential principle of interior design: material choices influence not only how a space looks, but how it feels.
Through close-up photography, the subtle qualities of those materials become part of the larger architectural story.
Framing the Alys Beach Landscape
One of the defining characteristics of Residence 303 is its relationship to the outdoors.
Glass doors connect the principal living spaces with covered terraces, while decorative shutters provide both privacy and visual interest. From these outdoor rooms, the surrounding architecture becomes an extension of the interior experience.
The town's white buildings, palm-lined avenues, and glimpses of the Gulf offer a series of changing compositions.
Natural light moves across surfaces throughout the day, bringing dimension to the plaster finishes, cabinetry, and textiles.
The distinction between interior and exterior becomes less pronounced. Instead, the two work together to create a cohesive sense of place.
Photographing Architecture with Intention
Architectural and interior photography is about more than documenting a completed space. It is about recognizing the decisions that give a project its identity.
At The May, that means looking beyond the overall rooms to consider the relationship between architectural openings, furnishings, materials, and the surrounding environment.
Wide compositions communicate how spaces connect. Closer studies reveal craftsmanship and texture. Exterior perspectives establish the residence within the distinctive architecture of Alys Beach.
Together, these images create a more complete understanding of the project and the design thinking behind it.
A Distinctive Expression of Coastal Living
Residence 303 at The May demonstrates how architecture and interiors can work together to create a sophisticated coastal environment without relying on excess.
Its thoughtful material palette, connection to outdoor space, and relationship with the Alys Beach Town Center make it an engaging example of contemporary residential design along Scenic Highway 30A.
At M Little Productions, we approach architectural and interior photography with an appreciation for the people, ideas, and details behind each project.
Our goal is to create imagery that respects the designer's intention, communicates the architect's vision, and gives each space the attention it deserves.
